let me ask you this about michigan workers. there are some who actually support this new legislation. >> reporter: they do. that's a very good point, wolf. it's a minority. you have the majority of union workers that are fighting this because they think it's going to be lower wages, less bargaining power. but i spoke with a former union worker who was with ford for 16 years. i met with him first this summer when we were here in michigan covering the election and the campaign here. he's been fighting for two years to get this right to work legislation passed and here's why. you support the right to work legislation but you're going to stay a member of the union and pay those union dues. >> that's right. >> reporter: so what changes for you now? >> it will give me a voice. it will give me leverage inside the union. under current law, i can retire but i still have to pay the union so they don't care. >> reporter: and that's what is critical in all of this, wolf. the unions are going to have to make a very good case to every worker

he picks a place in michigan and he meets up with bob dole. the two of them nowhere near politics. both of them so wounded and talked all the time in that hospital about what they would do in the future. both wanted to be doctors but both so harmed that being a doctor was, at that point, just completely out of the question. they had to come up with other careers and i talked with both of them about their relationship a while back and they describe that time in the hospital. take a listen. >> i used to watch him play bridge. he was the best bridge player in the hospital. we sat around and talked about what we were going to do with the rest of our life. i said, bob, what are you going to be doing? and one thing about bob dole, he had had his life mapped out. really mapped out. he says, well, when i get back, i'll be a county attorney. then i'll be in the legislature. the first opening of congress, that's where i'll go. i said, gee, that's a good idea. >> inouye actually beat dole and said, i'm here in the congress, where are you? dole joined him and later were both world war ii heroe
